Comprehensive refurbishment of Mas Solà farmhouse for a rural hotel and winery
El Montmell, Tarragona.
Mas Solà is a 14th-century farmhouse located in the mountainous landscape of El Montmell, in the Baix Penedès region. The complex was in a medium to advanced state of deterioration, with severely damaged roofs, but with its entire historic structure still intact and an exceptionally clear heritage reading. Among its most valuable elements are the original kitchen, the barrel vaults on the ground floor, the former stables and the masonry layout typical of medieval farmhouses with both defensive and agricultural character.

Project under development
The project is conceived as a comprehensive refurbishment that fully preserves the existing volume, proportions and heritage elements. The structures are consolidated, the historic spaces are restored and the new uses are adapted without altering the construction logic of the complex. The only significant addition is the new winery, integrated within the central courtyard enclosure and designed to make use of the hectares of vineyards surrounding the farmhouse, thus recovering its original agricultural tradition.

The farmhouse will be transformed into a six-bedroom rural hotel, with spacious communal areas, a dining room, a relaxation room and a wine tasting space located in the historic kitchen.
The existing caretaker’s house will be refurbished as an independent accommodation, while the traditional annexes will be restored to host the winemaking activity. Outside, a porch and a swimming pool area complete the experience, always respecting the character of the Montmell landscape.

The intervention uses materials compatible with traditional Catalan architecture, such as stone, lime, ceramic and wood. The roofs are fully reconstructed, improving their energy efficiency, while the building services are integrated discreetly. Natural ventilation, the recovery of the original flooring and the preservation of the old circulation routes ensure a coherent continuity between past and present.
Mas Solà is currently under construction. Very soon, it will open its doors as a rural hotel and winery, offering an authentic experience based on the history of the place, wine tastings made with the estate’s own vineyard production, and the calmness of a protected natural setting. It is a project designed to bring life back to the farmhouse and allow its legacy to continue in an honest and contemporary way.
