In the heart of Barcelona’s Guinardó neighborhood, a heritage restoration project has been carried out, transforming this historic dwelling built in the 1930s as part of the emblematic “Casas Baratas” housing development.

The essence of this dwelling lies in the careful preservation and enhancement of numerous original elements, such as the interior joinery, hydraulic tile flooring, and period light fixtures, among others. These historic details have been meticulously preserved, infusing the residence with authenticity and character.

The project focused on a comprehensive renovation of the dwelling, encompassing both the interior spaces and the exterior patio, adapting them to contemporary needs. To achieve this new layout, selective structural interventions were carried out, enabling a fluid connection between the different rooms.

The restoration also exposes some of the traditional construction systems, such as metal beams with ceramic brick vaults. This decision highlights the historical richness of the original construction.

The project focused on a comprehensive renovation of the dwelling, encompassing both the interior spaces and the exterior courtyard, adapting them to current needs.

To achieve this redistribution, targeted structural changes were carried out, allowing for fluid communication between the various spaces.

A harmonious dialogue between past and present

But this project goes beyond mere preservation. It achieves a harmonious integration of modern elements within its design. For example, large steel profiles have been incorporated into the creation of new openings, generating a visual contrast that allows the contemporary interventions to be clearly recognized within the historical context.

In addition, contemporary materials have been introduced, one of which is microcement. These materials were carefully selected to ensure their compatibility with the existing structure.

A highlight of the restoration is the recovery and enhancement of the original staircase, which is now crowned by a skylight that floods all interior spaces with natural light. This addition not only brings luminosity, but also emphasizes the beauty of the staircase and its significance within the home.

This heritage restoration project stands as a testament to how the past and the present can coexist in perfect harmony.

This home in Guinardó stands as an example of respectful conservation, highlighting its historical value and its relevance today.
